When I visited Spain my junior year of high school, I gave the family I lived with some gifts. For my "brother" (aka the student), I bought an Iowa sweatshirt. For his parents, I brought other random stuff. I also made them a dessert one night... grilled reeses, mmmm. They kind of liked it, but thought it was really rich, which makes sense, I guess.
Anyways, when I was packing and getting ready to leave to come home, they gave me a bottle of wine. It's a 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. My mom wanted to cook with it when I brought it home, but I basically told her that it was out of the question. Instead, I told her that I was going to save it until I was old enough to appreciate wine. That way, I could let it "age." In other words, I wanted to enjoy it.
My roommate's 21st birthday was a week ago. His parents came for the weekend. Within his presents were two bottles of wine. So, I went home this weekend to march at the Iowa/ISU game (I've still got bragging rights). And while I was there, I remembered to bring my wine back to my apartment when I was leaving Ames.
So, I cracked open the bottle tonight. My roommate opened one of his bottles, and I opened mine. It's really good, but also really dry. I haven't gotten used to dry wines yet. Usually, I need to eat something with them, like cheese and crackers. BUT, I didn't have any cheese. So here I am, just slowly sipping my wine, without any cheese. This is sad, but it's okay. It means that I get to taste the actual wine. I think I could get used to drier wine if I had it more often.
Also, I read a study earlier today to figure out what kind of wine had the best health benefits. I knew that red wines had more of an effect than white wines, but I wasn't sure which red wines were the best when it came to healthiness... And it turns out that the drier the wine, the more of a chance that the wine will be filled with the flavonoids and antioxidants that are beneficial. I've got a good and healthy wine. This is cool. I've got some other things to say, but I've got enough homework tonight to where I need to get that done. Later, gators!
i'm going to go have to buy some cheese though, for sure

Yeah, Munster cheese goes pretty well with red wine..if you want something other than sharp cheddar or something.
